Battlefield 3: What's New in Multiplayer?

Battlefield 3 has introduced some exciting new features. Weapon mechanics have been changed to adapt to the new graphics engine. You can now engage in suppression fire a la Brothers in Arms. During suppressive fires, the screen becomes blurry and reduce your fire accuracy considerably, adding more realism to the game. The realistic environment together with brutal gun battles can surely be vertigo-inducing, which is why BF 3 is here to stay for a very long time.

I know that you like the BF3 multiplayer more than single player missions and so I thought to share some tips and tricks as well as basic stuff that most newbie players will like to check if they haven’t played the game. This guide will provide Battlefield 3 online multiplayer tips on bare basics, kits, weapons and other key aspects of the game. So what are you waiting for? Jump right in:

Multiplayer Basics

One of the highlights of Battlefield 3 is the online multiplayer mode. Players can engage in intense conflicts in different game modes. It allows players to assume any one of the four roles viz. Recon, Assault, Engineer and Support. Several game modes were announced a month ago. Of these, Team Deathmatch has been reintroduced in this version (The last time this game mode was introduced in Battlefield 1942).

Like any multiplayer game, Battlefield 3 has several game modes. But it would not be too wise if you start comparing them to the ones in Call of Duty. When I first bumped into a few maps, I saw a drought of enemies and I had to hunt them down (and got hunted too) in the first few moments of gameplay. Call of Duty is out-and-out action, but in BF3, you will have a difficult time spotting down your opponents.

While playing any game mode, it is important that you keep patience and don’t waste your tickets (if you are with the assault side, i.e. the side which is tasked to attack.) I did this and got respawned back in the area where I started. This made it quite tiresome for me to get back to my strategic point and shoot down opponents. Also remember that BF3 is all about team play, so you should be more focused on helping your squad to achieve victory.

Game Modes

Beginners might be confused as to which game mode will offer hours and hours of shooting fun. Factors such as tickets might be considered but to me all game modes offer the same level of gameplay satisfaction. Just to make things a bit easier, I have put down below key features of each multiplayer mode. I always believe that bullet lists tend to explain things much easier than paragraphs.

Conquest

  • Game type: Objective
  • Players: Console 12 vs. 12 players, PC 16 vs. 16 or 32 vs. 32 players
  • Game objective: The team that takes away all the respawn tickets from the opposing team wins.
  • Tactics: Make sure you capture maximum flags. The team with a few flags will have one respawn ticket taken away automatically every few seconds.

Team Deathmatch

Developers have introduced Team Deathmatch, which is one of the simplest Battlefield 3 online multiplayer gameplay modes.

  • Players: 12 vs. 12 team based gameplay
  • Objective: Your team must eliminate the opposing team to win. Your team will have to deplete all 100 respawn tickets of the opposing force. Unfortunately, you won’t have access to any vehicles.

Rush

  • Game mode: Objective
  • Players: 16 versus 16 players PC/12 versus 12 consoles on PC
  • Objective: You will have to defend or attack two MCOM stations. The stations are randomly located in various sections of the map.
  • Respawn Tickets: 100
  • Defender Tactics: If you are on the side of the defenders, you and your team will have to defend these stations until the attacker side’s respawn tickets are depleted. The bombs placed at the MCOM site needs to be defused in order to prevent it from getting destroyed.
  • Attacker Tactics: One of the key Battlefield 3 multiplayer tips for attackers in Rush mode is to install bombs. You and your team will begin at a deployment location and charge at the defender base. Each base has two MCOM stations. You and your team have to place charge or timed bombs to blow up the stations and prevent defenders from defusing the bombs. To place bombs, all you have to do is go near the MCOM station, press E (PC) or B (Xbox 360) or O (PS3).

Squad Rush

This game mode is more like the regular Rush game, but requires squad level tactics and has only 2 MCOM stations. Regular Rush game had two MCOM stations in each base of the defenders. In this mode, one MCOM station will be placed in your base and another at the opposing players’ base.

  • Game mode: Objective
  • Players (4 versus 4)
  • Respawn Tickets: 20
  • Defender and Attacker tactics: Same as Rush

Squad Deathmatch

Like Team Deathmatch, Squad Deathmatch has similar objective except that this game mode focuses of squad-based gameplay.

You will have four squads consisting of four players. There are 50 respawn tickets and taking away all of them of the opposing team by killing their players will make your team victorious.

Battlefield 3 Multiplayer Kits

Source: via Shacknews

At the beginning, you will be presented with four kit choices. You can choose any one kit from them. These include Engineer, Recon, Support, and Assault. Each class offers a special set of weapons and gadgets. You can customize your kit and select the primary weapon, gadgets (there will be only two gadgets to choose from and a class.

Assault

  • Primary Weapon: Assault Rifle
  • Gadgets: Medical kit and defibrillator
  • Optional: M26 Modular Accessory Shotgun System. You can equip this weapon with grenades and other ammo and rush in to your opposing team for a full frontal attack.

Recon

  • Primary weapon: sniper rifle
  • Additional weapons/equipment: Motion Sensors to monitor key points. You can also use SOFLAM laser designator to mark down enemy targets so that your teammates can reach there and eliminate the opposing forces.
  • Choosing the recon kit is for those who prefer stealth and action instead of out and out gameplay. But you will have to be extra careful and choose the right strategic point to ensure quicker reinforcements.

Support

  • Primary Weapon: Light Machine Gun
  • Gadget(s): Ammo Resupply Pack. The support class usually provides support to the teammates and uses a variety of explosives like the Claymore mine and C4 Charge.

Engineer

  • Primary Tool: Carbine
  • Role: Fix up or repair damaged vehicles. Engineers can also damage the opposing team’s vehicles.
  • Weapons: mainly anti-vehicle, including stingers, RPGs and Javelins.
