In the history of Bethesda’s role-playing video game series, gamers have tirelessly hunted down some interesting, useful and outright funny secrets hidden somewhere deep within chasms, jungles and dungeons. Some of these treasures offer quirky references to popular movies, video games and books. In the open-world Skyrim, there is plenty of fun stuff to hunt for and this list only presents some of the best Gamers who have played Oblivion and Morrowind will find these Elder Scrolls V Skyrim Easter eggs worth hunting for.
8. The Legend of Sleepy Hollow
In Skyrim, There is a reference to the Headless Horseman - one of the main characters in Washington Irving’s The Legend of the Sleepy Hollow. If you follow the road to Northwatch Keep, you will meet this headless entity. Hold on; don’t draw your weapon. Just follow him quietly and he will take you to an eerie-looking graveyard filled with skeletons. Hidden amidst flesh and bones will be treasure chest. You can unlock the chest to get access to magical weapons. Make sure your character has a high lockpick skill.
7. The Legend of Zelda
A reference to the dialogue spoken by a moblin in the first Legend of Zelda game can be found in Skyrim. In the very first quest, when you accompany Farkas on your journey to meet the Companions, you will witness Farkas transforming into a werewolf. Soon, he will utter “It’s a secret to everybody”, a phrase uttered by the cave-dweller moblin in Legend of Zelda I.
6. East India Company
One of the factions of Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim, the East Empire Company is a trading company that conducts business in the Eastern Provinces. With the main office located in the Imperial City, the company trades in mazte, Telvanni bug mask and other goods. The monopoly it has in trade and the name will remind you of East India Company and its trades. Turn the pages of history and you will find how it was a crucial part of Indian history.
5. Hellraiser’s Lament Configuration
Those who have watched the Hellraiser movie series will immediately recognize the Lexicon box offered by From-Deepest-Fathoms Argonian. You will have to search for this Argonian in the Riften docks. The box looks very similar to the puzzle box or the Lament Configuration you’ve seen in Hellraiser.
4. Mad Hatter of Alice in Wonderland Easter Egg
This is one of the most interesting and funnest Elder Scrolls V Skyrim Easter Eggs. In one of the quests, you will have to search for Sheogorath, “The Lord of Madness”. Note the name which is very similar to the Mad Hatter. Still don’t believe! Wait until you find him in the middle of the forest, hosting a tea party.
3. Lord of the Rings Easter Egg
Home of the Companions faction, Whiterun is a fictional city located in the Whiterun Hold province. By referring to a tactical map, you will find this city quite easily. It is famous for Gildergreen, a giant old withered tree. The tree’s condition is quite reminiscent of the White Tree in the Return of the King. Whiterun offers plenty of sightseeing opportunities, including the legendary mead-hall and the Skyforge, which is the biggest in the open-world Skyrim.
2. King Arthur’s Excalibur
In Skyrim, there are plenty of references to historical incidents, myths and legends. One of the Easter eggs points to the legend of King Arthur and the mythical Excalibur.
In Bleakwind Basin, you will see a bony arm holding a sword. The arm can be seen rising from a pond located northeast of the Basin. I am sure this might be a reference to the Arthurian legend - Lady of the Lake.
In another location, a steel sword can be seen amidst a pile of rocks in a place called Rebel’s Cairn. This place is located slightly south of Broken Tower Redoubt. Both these Easter Eggs have the Arthurian Legend connection.

1. Minecraft Easter Egg
One of the most talked-about Easter eggs in the Skyrim universe is the Minecraft pickaxe reference. For those not in the know, Minecraft is an indie game developed by Markus Persson. It is a sandbox-style role-playing/action game that allows gamers to explore strange worlds, fight monsters and craft items. The pixilated world has wowed the gaming audience since its launch. Players who know the ins and outs of the game will quickly recognize the Minecraft pickaxe Skyrim Easter egg. What’s surprising about the “Notched Pickaxe” Easter Egg is that Bethesda is embroiled in a legal battle with the creator of Minecraft, but they still have added a reference. While this has been seen as the game developer’s truce strategy, some believe that the developers have included this secret because they love playing the game. And they have nodded their heads in agreement – they do love the game and have played Minecraft in their free time.
